Hashi Benkei Yama is a traditional yama float featured during the Ato Matsuri of Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri. The float depicts the famous encounter between the warrior monk Benkei and Ushiwakamaru, the young warrior who later became known as Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
The story of Hashi Benkei Yama takes place on Kyoto’s Gojo Bridge. According to legend, Benkei challenged Ushiwakamaru after encountering him on the bridge. Despite Benkei’s great strength and experience, Ushiwakamaru defeated him with remarkable agility and skill. Impressed by the young warrior, Benkei became his loyal follower.
The Hashi Benkei scene is dramatically represented on the float. Ushiwakamaru is shown balancing on one foot on the railing of the bridge while facing Benkei. This striking composition captures the movement and tension of the legendary encounter.
Through its figures and traditional craftsmanship, Hashi Benkei Yama preserves an important Japanese tale and brings it into the living tradition of the Gion Matsuri. The float demonstrates how Kyoto’s festival connects historical legends, storytelling, and traditional art for generations to come.
