Jōmyō Yama — A Warrior’s Story at Gion Matsuri

 Jōmyō Yama is a distinctive yama float featured during the Ato Matsuri of Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri. The float depicts a dramatic moment from the 12th-century conflict between the Taira and Minamoto clans at the Uji Bridge in Kyoto.

The scene shows the warrior monk Tsutsui Jōmyō preparing to fight during the Battle of Uji. As he moves forward, another warrior monk, Ichirai Hōshi, famously leaps over him to reach the front of the battle. This unusual composition gives the Jōmyō Yama float its dynamic character.
