Hashi Benkei Yama is one of the memorable yama floats featured during the Ato Matsuri of Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri. The float brings a famous scene from Japanese legend to life, featuring the warrior monk Benkei and Ushiwakamaru, the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
The story of Hashi Benkei Yama takes place on Kyoto’s Gojo Bridge. According to the traditional tale, Benkei challenged Ushiwakamaru after encountering him on the bridge. Although Benkei was a powerful warrior monk, Ushiwakamaru defeated him through remarkable speed and skill. Impressed by the young warrior, Benkei became his loyal follower.
The Hashi Benkei scene is beautifully represented on the float. Ushiwakamaru is shown balancing on one foot on the railing of the bridge while Benkei confronts him. This dramatic composition captures the tension and movement of the legendary encounter.
Beyond its famous story, Hashi Benkei Yama reflects Kyoto’s ability to preserve historical legends through festival art. Traditional figures, craftsmanship, and storytelling come together to make the float an important part of the Gion Matsuri's cultural heritage.
