Ashikari Yama Kyoto is one of the traditional yama floats featured during the Saki Matsuri of Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri. The float is based on the Noh play Ashikari, a story of separation, hardship, and reunion between a husband and wife.
The story follows a couple who are separated after the husband falls into poverty. He becomes an ashikari, or reed cutter, while his wife leaves him to seek a better life. Their paths eventually cross again, leading to a moving reunion.
The Ashikari Yama Gion Festival float brings this traditional story to life through its figures, costumes, and carefully preserved craftsmanship. It is also known for an exceptionally old costume, adding to the historical value of the float.
Beyond its beautiful appearance, Ashikari Yama Kyoto represents the emotional storytelling found throughout the Gion Matsuri. Each yama preserves a different legend, literary work, or religious tradition, allowing visitors to experience Japanese cultural history through art and festival tradition.
