Ato Matsuri — The Later Festival of Gion Matsuri

Ato Matsuri Kyoto is the second half of Kyoto’s famous Gion Matsuri, traditionally held from July 18 to July 24. Known as the “Later Festival,” it offers a more intimate atmosphere while showcasing some of the city’s most beautiful Ato Matsuri Yamaboko floats.

During Gion Ato Matsuri, the historic neighborhoods prepare their floats and display treasured artworks and decorations for visitors. The main Ato Matsuri Junko takes place on July 24, when the floats travel through Kyoto in a grand procession.

The Gion Festival Ato Matsuri is also known for its quieter streets and traditional neighborhood atmosphere. Visitors can admire the floats up close, experience local traditions, and appreciate the craftsmanship behind each yamaboko. With fewer floats than the Saki Matsuri, Ato Matsuri provides a more relaxed way to experience the cultural heart of Gion Matsuri.
