Iwato Yama: The Legend of Amaterasu in Gion Matsuri

Iwato Yama is one of the most fascinating floats of the Gion Matsuri, deeply rooted in Japanese creation mythology. It tells the story of Amaterasu Ōmikami, the powerful Japanese sun goddess, often known as the sun goddess Amaterasu, whose actions shaped the balance between light and darkness.

According to legend, after a dispute with her brother, Amaterasu hid inside a sacred cave, plunging the world into darkness. Crops failed, and chaos spread across the land. The gods, led by Izanagi no Mikoto, devised a plan to lure her out. Through music, laughter, and ritual, they succeeded—bringing the Japanese sun god back into the world and restoring light.

Today, Iwato Yama represents this dramatic moment of emergence. As it parades through Kyoto, it symbolizes renewal, hope, and the power of divine harmony. For visitors, it offers a glimpse into how the story of Amaterasu Ōmikami the sun goddess continues to shine at the heart of Japan’s most iconic festival.
