The Ato-Matsuri is the second part of Kyoto's Gion Festival, serving as a ceremonial farewell to the Yasaka Shrine deities. Taking place from July 18-24, it is a more intimate and less crowded event than the main Saki Matsuri, featuring 11 majestic Yamaboko floats.
The floats are on public display from July 21-23, accompanied by traditional festival music. The main procession, or Junkō, is held on July 24, with the floats parading through the city in the reverse direction of the earlier festival. The reintroduction of the magnificent Ōfune Boko float in 2014 was a highlight, bringing a sense of celebration and historical continuity to the event after a 125-year absence.
