Naginata Boko – Kyoto’s Sacred Sword Float at Gion Festival

In Kyoto’s vibrant Gion Festival, the Naginata Boko leads the grand Saki Matsuri procession on July 17, instantly recognizable by its towering halberd (naginata) perched atop the float’s central pole.

The float carries layers of legend. It's said that the original naginata was forged by the legendary swordsmith Sanjo Munechika in the 10th century, imbued with mystical and healing powers—so influential that it inspired the Noh drama Kokaji.

A unique feature of Naginata Boko is its youthful guardian—the chigo, a young boy who embodies purity. He frontlines the parade, ceremoniously severing a sacred rope with a real sword to signal the festival’s official start.

Beyond its role as a ritual centerpiece, Naginata Boko is a showcase of craftsmanship—adorned with exquisite tapestries, carvings, and ornaments that reflect centuries of artistic devotion.

Whether witnessed during the radiant Yoiyama evenings or amidst the full splendor of the parade, Naginata Boko stands as a powerful symbol of Kyoto’s spiritual tradition, community pride, and cultural beauty.
