Mōsō Yama – A Story of Devotion in Motion

Among the many exquisite floats of the Saki Matsuri, Mōsō Yama tells a heartfelt tale of filial love and resilience. Inspired by the ancient Confucian story of Meng Zong (Mōsō in Japanese), this float brings a legend to life in vibrant form.

In a winter marked by hardship, a devoted son ventures into snow in search of bamboo shoots—his mother's beloved comfort. When all seemed lost, his tears magically revealed the hidden shoots, tending to his ailing mother’s recovery. Mōsō Yama honours this act of compassion with a striking black-and-white tapestry design, echoing traditional ink painting aesthetics.

Its artistry is further amplified by a textile inspired by Kyoto artist Seiho Takeuchi, known for blending Japanese and European styles. Positioned in a serene display area reminiscent of Kyoto’s traditional courtyards, Mōsō Yama embodies both beauty and cultural reverence.

This float stands not only as a visual marvel but as a moving tribute to loyalty and familial devotion—making Mōsō Yama a memorable highlight of the Gion Festival.
