The Gion Festival 2025, one of Japan’s most famous and vibrant cultural events, will once again light up the streets of Kyoto in July 2025. Held annually throughout the month of July, the festival is centered around Yasaka Shrine and has a rich history that spans over a thousand years. Visitors from around the world flock to Kyoto to witness this magnificent display of tradition, pageantry, and spiritual devotion.
A Glimpse into the Past
The origins of the Gion Festival date back to 869 AD when it was first organized to appease the gods during a deadly epidemic. What started as a ritual of purification has evolved into a grand celebration of Kyoto’s heritage, featuring intricate floats, traditional music, and sacred processions. Despite its long history, the festival continues to thrive, preserving ancient customs while embracing the energy of modern-day Kyoto.
Festival Highlights for 2025
July 1 – 31: The entire month is filled with events, starting with opening ceremonies, followed by the preparation of floats (yamaboko) and community rituals. The city slowly transforms into a festive wonderland.
Yoiyama (July 14–16 & 21–23): These are the nights before the main float processions. The streets of downtown Kyoto are filled with food stalls, people dressed in colorful yukatas, and beautifully lit floats on display. Traditional music floats through the air, creating a magical nighttime atmosphere.
Yamaboko Junko (July 17 & 24): This is the most anticipated part of the festival. On July 17, the “Saki Matsuri” parade features 23 gorgeously decorated floats pulled through the streets. On July 24, during the “Ato Matsuri,” an additional 11 floats parade through the city in a more tranquil procession.
