Experience the Magic of Gion Matsuri 2024

Gion Matsuri, Kyoto’s most famous festival, is a month-long celebration of culture, tradition, and spectacular floats. Held every July, this grand event transforms Kyoto into a vibrant hub of festivities, attracting visitors from around the world.

The History of Gion Matsuri

Dating back to 869, Gion Matsuri began as a purification ritual to ward off plagues. Over the centuries, it has evolved into one of Japan’s most significant festivals, organized by Yasaka Shrine. The festival showcases Kyoto’s rich heritage through processions, performances, and religious ceremonies.

Highlights of Gion Matsuri 2024

The festival is best known for its Yamaboko Junko, the grand parade of beautifully crafted floats. These floats, divided into Yamaboko groups—Yama (mountain floats) and Hoko (tall floats)—are intricately decorated and pulled through Kyoto’s streets. The main parades take place on July 17 (Saki Matsuri) and July 24 (Ato Matsuri).

Even before the parade, the lively Yoiyama evenings (July 14-16 and July 21-23) offer street fairs, food stalls, and opportunities to see the floats up close, illuminated beautifully at night.

Traditional Elements & Modern Attractions

Visitors can enjoy traditional performances, tea ceremonies, and religious rituals at Yasaka Shrine. The festival also blends modern attractions like guided tours and interactive events, making it a unique experience for all ages.
