Gion Matsuri Dragons

The Gion Matsuri Dragons are an iconic and captivating element of the Gion Matsuri festival, one of the most famous and traditional festivals in Kyoto, Japan. Gion Matsuri is celebrated throughout the month of July, with the main procession known as the "Yamaboko Junko" taking place on July 17th.

The festival features large, elaborate floats known as "yamaboko," and among them are the distinctive Gion Matsuri Dragons. These dragons are not traditional representations of mythical creatures but rather colorful and vibrant symbols crafted to enhance the festive atmosphere.

The Gion Matsuri Dragons are often part of the float decorations, adorning the sides or tops of the yamaboko. These dragons are crafted with meticulous attention to detail, showcasing brilliant hues and intricate designs. They are typically made from materials such as silk, paper, and bamboo, adding to their lightweight and dynamic appearance.
