The Gion Festival is Coming to Town. Here's What You Need to Know

The Gion Festival is coming to town! Celebrated annually in Kyoto, Japan, this festival attracts over a million visitors every year. It has been celebrated since the 17th century when locals burned paper lanterns as a means of lighting their way through long nights. These days it's celebrated with many more modern attractions including yukata (light summer kimono), geisha performances, and dance.

The festivities take place on July 1-3 this year and will be happening right outside and it's time to make the most of your visit. GionFestival.org provides a one-stop resource for information about this festival. Read our article on "What You Need to Know" before you go! This year's event runs from July 1 through July 16, so there are plenty of opportunities for visitors to experience Japan's cultural heritage firsthand in Kyoto City.
