The Gion Festival is one of the most famous festivals in Kyoto, Japan. Held annually from July 17th to August 16th, it’s best known for its spectacular lanterns and large-scale floats that parade through the streets of Gion district at night.
It’s a tradition for many locals to go see these lanterns with their friends and family on this day, which means the gion festival can be quite crowded – but there are plenty of events taking place all over town.
The parade of floats continues through downtown until nightfall when festivities come to a close. Each day at 9pm there are more performances for you to enjoy: traditional Japanese dance (Omiki), drumming.
